What's in an Eye Exam?

Medical and Ocular History

The technician will typically begin your exam by asking if you have any medical conditions, as well as asking you to list any medications you are currently taking.  Make sure you tell us everything, as even over-the-counter vitamins and supplements may affect your eye health!

Non-Contact Tonometry

The dreaded air puff!  This part of the exam gives us a measurement of your intraocular pressure by lightly blowing three puffs of air onto your cornea.  This is helpful in screening for glaucoma.

Visual Acuity

This is where we find out how well you are seeing with your current glasses, or without glasses at all.  You've probably seen the measurement "20/20" and that's this part!

Slit Lamp Exam

The doctor will look at your eye with her big biomicroscope.  This checks not only the health of the front of your eye, but may also give her a glimpse into the back of your eye.  Depending on your eye health and other factors, she may do this again after dilating your eyes.

Refraction

"Which is better, one or two?"  This part of the exam is where we find out your prescription for glasses.  There are no right answers here, just tell us the truth!

Dilation

In dilation, the doctor will put drops in your eyes which essentially keeps your pupils from getting smaller when she shines a light in them.  This is important, as it allows her to get a really good, 3-D view of the back of your eye to make sure everything is healthy!  Dilation drops typically last about 3-4 hours, so if you do not feel comfortable driving, please bring someone with you to your appointment.

Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscopy

This is where the doctor put those goofy glasses on and looks into the back of your eye after dilation to make sure everything looks good.  The lights are going to be bright!

Additional Testing

Based on your eye health, additional tests may be needed during your eye exam.  Read more about them by clicking the button below!
