This it the test where you click the button every time you see the light blink. We use this test to measure your peripheral vision, or how well you can see off to the side. This is very important in the management of glaucoma, some prescription drug use, and any other condition where we might need to monitor how the eyes and the brain are communicating.
Pictures are worth a thousand words, and that's exactly the case when it's the back of your eye! We will sometimes take pictures of your retina in order to keep track of things, like your optic nerves in glaucoma, moles in the back of the eye, scars, or changes related to macular degeneration or diabetes.
This test gives us some of the best information with some of the least effort from the patient. OCT is basically and "ultrasound" of the eye, though it uses light instead of sound to generate images. This allows us to see each retinal layer and determine if there is any tissue being lost in glaucoma, or if the macula is swelling in diabetes, as well as many other things!
